MIT Publisher selects Engenda

Engenda Manages Content for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Providence, RI -- February 13, 2004 -- Red Bridge Interactive, Inc. today announced that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has purchased Engenda.

The Engenda Content Management System will be used by MIT's Reference Publications Office, which publishes collaborative reference works such as the MIT course catalog, student and staff directories, and campus factbook. Engenda will allow content authors at MIT to go online to update their own sections of a shared document. It will provide editorial controls and management tools for version tracking, inter-office messaging, and content approvals. MIT will also use Engenda's XML capabilities to facilitate the automatic layout and production of content tailored for print as well as the web.

"These publications involve hundreds of contributors throughout the Institute, so we are well aware of the repetitive labor we can save by abandoning paper proof and converting to a fully electronic publishing system," said Stuart Kiang, director of MIT Reference Publications. "But in planning this step, we were also mindful that building an effective content management system is a necessary foundation for future improvements in the design and function of MIT's reference publications-enhancements that will turn them into tomorrow's electronic books."

Some of MIT's requirements against which Engenda was evaluated include:

  • Presenting content contributors with a simple, easily grasped interface for editing preexisting content and adding new content.
  • Smoothly handling the various kinds of content to be published, ranging from tabular data to narrative text, lists, and charts.
  • Accommodating at least 300 unique content contributors and validating their identity through MIT personal certificates.
  • Providing editorial controls and management tools for version tracking, messaging, and varying levels of content validation.
  • Facilitating publication in various media, including print, web, and CD-ROM, by automatically formatting content for the target medium or preparing content for auto-formatting in allied applications.
